The Hollywood power couple reportedly spent $40 million to buy a stunning — if slightly run down — villa in the Northern Italian hills of Valpolicella. The Italian property will be used as a vacation home. In that regard, they will be joining actor George Clooney, who also owns an Italian villa. Clooney’s Villa Oleandra is located in Laglio on Lake Como. The actor filmed parts of his blockbuster movie “Oceans Twelve” there.

John Travolta has decided to drop charges against two people accused of trying to extort money from him in the days after the death of his teenage son Jett in the Bahamas. Prosecutor Neil Braithwaite had submitted a motion to drop the case just as a retrial was about to start for the two defendants. “The Travolta family has said that this matter has caused them unbelievable stress and pain and they wish to put this whole thing behind them,” Braithwaite told the court after a jury had been picked to hear the case.

George Clooney’s hitman tale “The American” has captured the top spot at the box office with a $16.4 million debut over the long Labor Day weekend. Since opening Wednesday, the Focus Features release has taken in $19.5 million. The 20th Century Fox revenge romp “Machete” and Sony’s heist thriller “Takers” were in a duel for second-place. “Machete” features a cast including Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal and Lindsay Lohan in a bloody tale of a former Mexican federal cop (Danny Trejo) taking on crooks, dirty politicians and thugs by the score. “Going the Distance” stars Drew Barrymore and Justin Long as a couple trying to maintain a coast-to-coast long-distance relationship.

Ashton Kutcher allegedly stepped out on his 47-year old wife, Demi Moore and into a cheating scandal with a 20-something blonde, a tabloid is reporting. But Kutcher, 32, is hotly denying the claim and talking lawsuit. He jumped on Twitter yesterday (Sept. 1) to make clear that he has not cheated on his hot wife, who just Tweeted bikini photos that would put most 20-year-olds to shame. The report in Star magazine claims it has an eyewitness who saw Ashton “kissing and groping a hot young blonde by an out-of-the-way bathroom at Italian restaurant Madeo in L.A.”

Actress Julianne Moore really turned it on for a sexy Bulgari ad campaign — maybe a little too much, at least for Italian tastes. The city of Venice has banned one of the ads from appearing on billboards in the historic district. The luxury accessories brand photographed the stunning 49-year-old actress on a chaise longue with a handbag, two lion cubs and practically nothing on. The ad was scheduled to be posted on the Doge’s Palace, which overlooks St Mark’s Square and the city’s lagoon.

Robert “Joe” Halderman, the former television producer who tried to blackmail David Letterman over the comedian’s sexual dalliances at the office was freed from jail today (Sept. 2), after serving four months of a six-month sentence in the case. The scandal exposed Letterman’s personal life to public scrutiny. Halderman got time off for good behavior during his stint at the Rikers Island jail complex, but he isn’t done with his sentence: He still has to complete 1,000 hours of community service.

The hot mess actress, who recently was sprung from jail and rehab, looks classically elegant in video footage taken a week before she was packed off to jail. If her pending prison sentence was weighing on her mind it didn’t show. “The clothes were really beautiful,” she told the magazine’s reporter on the behind the scenes footage.

“Twilight” star Robert Pattinson’s good looks and charm is offset by his nasty habit of chain smoking cigarettes. Although he’s young and healthy he should take a warning from actor Michael Douglas before it’s too late. Since he rocketed to stardom in the Twilight series, Pattinson at times appears to be almost a chain smoker. Michael Douglas says he’s begun treatment for throat cancer, which he attributed to smoking and drinking, and said his odds of recovery are high, even though the cancer is at an advanced stage. In an appearance Tuesday on David Letterman’s “Late Show,” the actor said he faces an “eight-week struggle” that includes radiation and chemotherapy. A biopsy indicated that his cancer was at stage IV, which he described as “intense, and so they’ve got to go at it …” according to a transcript provided by CBS.

George Clooney plays an assassin in his new film “The American,” and it has a hidden dirty secret. Turns out to be an “art film.” Heavens, no! Director Anton Corbijn has crafted a quiet, haunting European thriller, drained of emotion and moving to its own deliberate pace. It’s the second film from Corbijn, a famed photographer and music video director who’s closely associated with the bands Depeche Mode and Joy Division (among others). His first film, “Control,” was a beautiful, austere black-and-white biopic of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis.
