Bracing for an infusion of rock-and-roll, Broadway got a taste of new musical American Idiot at the Grammy’s Sunday night (Jan. 31), featuring the music of Green Day. Based on Green Day’s album of the same name, the show’s cast joined up with frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and the band for a performance of “21 Guns,” a cut off 21st Century Breakdown. Call it Jersey Boys for a younger urban set. Armstrong and Michael Mayer, who is also directing the musicial, are handling the book.
Lucy Liu Bows, Jeff Daniels Returns in ‘God of Carnage’

Television and movie veteran Lucy Liu will make her Broadway debut in the Tony winning play God of Carnage, alongside Hollywood veteran Jeff Daniels. This will be the third cast change for the show. Joining Liu will be be Janet McTeer (Mary Stuart), who appeared in the London production of Carnage, and Dylan Baker, another Hollywood actor with a stage pedigree. Liu and McTeer will take spots played by Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden as the wives of the two husbands in the four-member cast. Harden won a Tony for her role in the play.
Ragtime Folds on Broadway; But Don’t Blame Hollywood Stars

Ragtime the $8 million Broadway musical revival is closing after a disappointing run, despite generally upbeat reviews when it opened only two months ago. Some say it couldn’t compete against other shows without a name – read Hollywood — star on the marquee. Ragtime to contend with other shows that included such Hollywood luminaries as Jude Law, Sienna Miller Catherine Zeta-Jones, Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig among their casts. Hollywood stars definitely help bring in tourists. But blame poor marketing and cheap producers for Ragtime’s demise.
